In-Service Training is one of six
subcommittees of the Committee on Professional Development.
This subcommittee is responsible for developing
workshops for all staff.
Dear Faculty and Staff Member:
On behalf of the In-Service Training Subcommittee, we would like to invite
you to our program. Workshops listed in this page have been designed to help you
explore various training opportunities at the College. In addition, these
programs will provide you with the opportunity to meet and share ideas with
other members of the College community and college-wide Committee on
Professional Development.

MENTORING STUDENTS:
DIVERSITY IN PRACTICE
Mentoring is a vital component in
the success of the urban college. Mentors help students adjust to college life
and connect to services. This session will focus on the following: a)
identifying and training students, staff, and faculty to be mentors; b)
supervising to assure consistent quality; and c) assessment to evaluate
effectiveness.

COMMUNICATING ACROSS
CULTURES AND VALUING DIVERSITY
This workshop is designed to
provide diversity/sensitivity training to managers, supervisors and other
employees in a diverse, multicultural setting. Participants of this workshop
will learn how to communicate effectively across cultures and handle conflict
surrounding issues of diversity in the academic and office environment. The
objectives of the workshop are to: a) gain an understanding of the meaning of
diversity, b) generate sensitivity to differences, and c) remove barriers that
get in the way of managing and working among people who are different.

Learn techniques for effective memo and letter writing. Three weeks before the
workshop, participants will be asked to provide the workshop instructor with a
copy of a troublesome memo or letter (remove names first) for analysis. The
workshop will be instructed by Dr. Barbara Comins, English Professor, who has
been published in scholarly journals and in The New York Times.
