New Faculty and Staff Orientation Program

New Faculty/Staff Orientation Subcommittee is one of six subcommittees of the Committee on Professional Development. This subcommittee is responsible for planning and implementation of workshops for new faculty and staff to enhance beginning professional life at LaGuardia and within CUNY.

Dear New Faculty and Staff Member:

On behalf of the Committee on Professional Development, we would like to welcome you to LaGuardia and invite you to our orientation program.

The forum and workshops listed in this brochure have been designed to introduce you to life at the College and to help you explore ways to meet the needs of the students we serve. In addition, these programs will provide you with the opportunity to meet and share ideas with other new faculty and staff members, as well as members of the college-wide Committee on Professional Development.

We hope that you enjoy these events and we look forward to working with you as you begin your career at LaGuardia.

Sincerely,

E-RESOURCES FOR FACULTY AND STUDENTS

What will your students be using for their research assignments? Are there alternatives to Google and other general search engines that they should know about? How can we make their research
experience easier and more effective? This workshop will introduce the Library’s electronic database collection and suggest how students can benefit from using it. It will also demonstrate how faculty can use the collection for their own research, as well as for designing class assignments and research papers. There will be hands-on activities to demonstrate some of the databases and information on all the Library services available to support their use.
Presenter: Jane Devine (Library Media Resources Center)

TIPS AND TACTICS FOR TIME MANAGEMENT AND
ORGANIZATION SKILLS (Designed for Faculty)

Feeling overwhelmed by deadlines as well as pressure from the many different demands on your time? Faculty members frequently report that they feel stressed by the multiple activities of committee work, teaching and research. There never seems to be enough time to get everything done on time. How can you work more efficiently and effectively and feel in control of your time?
This 2-hour workshop will provide practical strategies for: a) surviving information overload, b) taking control of your time, c) getting paperwork organized, d) prioritizing deadlines, e) integrating teaching, research, and professional activities to multi-task and leverage your time, f) managing multiple responsibilities (such as teaching, committee work, professional activities, research and publication), and g) making decisions and saying “no” based on your priorities. You will also learn to avoid the worst mistakes faculty make in allocating their time and best strategies for maximizing your productivity.
Presenter: Dr. Marie L. Radford (Pratt Institute)
