Harry N. Heinemann

Dr. Heinemann joined LaGuardia prior to its opening in 1970 as Dean of Cooperative Education. He was responsible for developing the college's coop program and later headed the development of the institution's international initiatives. Dr. Heinemann has a PhD from the University of Pittsbugh in Management and Economics, an MBA from Baruch College and a BMEE from CCNY.

Brita Immergut
Mathematics Department

Professor Brita Immergut earned her Ed.D. degree at Columbia University Teachers College with a thesis entitled: "Assessment of Basic Skills in Mathematics and Attitudes towards Mathematics in Working People". She is author or co-author of the following books: An Introduction to Algebra: A Workbook for Reading, Writing and Thinking about Mathematics", "Arithmetic and Algebra....again". "How to Help Your Child Excel in Math: An A to Z Survival Guide", and "Master Math: Solving Word Problems". She taught courses from basic math through calculus.

Lorence A. Long

Lorence A. Long brought his experience as a street worker, emergency room social worker, crisis unit staff member, grass-roots community organizer, mental health clinic director, and agency board member when he came to LaGuardia as a Human Services faculty member in 1974. As a faculty member, he served as organizer and chair of the Human Subjects Committee (IRB), chair of the Third-Year Review Committee, and Director of Human Services programs. His special interests have included the crisis of homelessness, and in using computers to facilitate instruction.

Freeman McMillan
Coop Education Department

Professor McMillan earned his B.A. in Urban Studies at Fordham University; M.S. in Urban Affairs, Hunter College. He served as a faculty advisor in the Division of Cooperative Education and as Program Director for the Division responsible for quality support to the faculty of the Division of Cooperative Education. Other leadership experiences include working in the capacity of corporate personnel administration and conducting state and federally funded demonstration projects to develop alternative models for the delivery of day care service in New York City.

I received a diploma in nursing from St.Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing and then continued my education at Hunter College, from which I was awarded a BSN and MSN. During my years at LaGuardia, I taught Fundamentals and Medical-Surgical Nursing courses. I was Chairperson of College Curriculum Committee for several years.

Kwan-Yuk C. Sit
Mathematics Department

Professor Sit received her Ph. D. in pure mathematics from the Graduate School at City University of New York. She created a multi-lingual math glossary which ESL students find very helpful in their study of mathematics. She coordinated with Clark-Atlanta University to disseminate a multi-media math instruction system which colleagues consider very effective in improving student performance in mathematics.

Mary F. Tobin

Professor Tobin received her Diploma in Nursing from Englewood Hospital School of Nursing, BSN from the University of Pennsylvania, and MA in Nursing from New York University. Hired to coordinate the Psychiatric Mental Health curriculum when the Program began, she was actively involved in all curriculum development, and ultimately taught in almost all courses. The highlight of her career at La Guardia was being appointed Nursing Program Director which provided her with the opportunity to develop and maintain relationships with local, state, regional and national agencies.

Professor Dorrie Williams earned his B.S. from the UCLA; M.S., Hunter College (CUNY), Ed.D, Columbia University. He served as Associate Dean/Professor in the Division of Cooperative Education, Executive Director of the School-to-Work Program, and Chairperson of CUNY CO-OP and Adjunct Professor (25 years) in the Mathematics Dept.

Gilbert H. Muller
English Department

Gilbert H. Muller (PhD, Stanford University) was one of the forty administrators and faculty members who founded LaGuardia in 1971. He was instrumental in developing the English and humanities departments and, as special assistant to three of the college’s presidents, in advancing LaGuardia’s school-college and international missions. Muller’s publications include books on Flannery O’Connor, Chester Himes, and John A. Williams, a study of immigration in American fiction, and many textbooks for college students.
