Math & Science
Mathematics and Science are part of LaGuardia’s Liberal Arts program.
A Liberal Arts education provides students with a comprehensive
foundation in language and literature, humanities, the social
sciences, mathematics and the sciences.
Liberal Arts students learn how to reason critically, communicate
effectively and make connections across extensive (and, often, very
different) fields of knowledge. They broaden their vision of the world
and cultivate new interests and talents.
At some point during their course of study, either at LaGuardia or a
senior college, students select a specific major within Liberal Arts
that reflects their interests or career goals.
The Mathematics department offers a wide variety of
courses from arithmetic and basic algebra to linear algebra, calculus,
statistics and differential equations.
The Natural Sciences area of LaGuardia offers courses in
Biology, Chemistry, Physics, General Science, and Health Science.
NSF Scholarships
LaGuardia strongly encourages eligible
math and science majors to apply for
National Science Foundation (NSF) scholarships. LaGuardia has been
awarded a prestigious grant to support these scholarships for students
who are pursuing Associate Degrees in computer science, engineering,
mathematics & related fields.
Students can receive scholarships for up to $3,125 per year, depending
upon their need and amount of funds available.
To be eligible, a student must:
- be a United States citizen, or an alien admitted as a refugee, or a
legal permanent resident;
- be enrolled full-time in a computer science, engineering or math
major.
- demonstrate academic potential. LaGuardia freshmen who have never
attended another college should have earned a B (or higher) grade point
average in high school. Current LaGuardia students must have a 2.75
college GPA and at least 9 credits earned at LaGuardia.
- demonstrate financial need and be eligible for Federal financial aid.
For more information, visit the Student Financial Services website.
Transfer
Liberal arts students should plan to transfer and earn a Bachelor’s degree.
LaGuardia graduates who have planned their program carefully can usually transfer to 4-year colleges as juniors.
Colleges that you’re considering for transfer may have different requirements, so you should meet regularly with a LaGuardia academic advisor and
Transfer Services, starting as early as possible.
Careers
A college degree or strong background in mathematics and science can lead to a variety of careers and a greater understanding of related subjects, like engineering, computers, economics and business.
Here are some of the most popular careers for Math and Science majors in New York City. We encourage you to research additional career opportunities.
Careers listed in bold usually require at least a Bachelor’s degree.
