Computers & Technology

Are you looking for exceptional instruction in computers? Do you seek Information Technology training that will be in demand not just today, but in the future? If so, you’ve come to the right place.

Recognized as one of NYC’s most technology-driven community colleges, LaGuardia teaches students how to get the most out of technology.

If you’ve had limited or no experience with computers, don’t worry. You’ll be introduced to them in an encouraging, supportive way via ePortfolio and your everyday coursework (even if you never take a computer class).

The Computer Information Systems department offers a comprehensive range of classes, including challenging, advanced level computer courses. (As a LaGuardia student, you can also take a course at another CUNY college if we don’t offer it.)

NSF Scholarships

LaGuardia strongly encourages eligible computer majors to apply for National Science Foundation (NSF) scholarships. LaGuardia has been awarded a prestigious grant to support these scholarships for students who are pursuing Associate Degrees in computer science, engineering, mathematics & related fields.

Students can receive scholarships for up to $3,125 per year, depending upon their need and amount of funds available.

To be eligible, a student must:

  • be a United States citizen, or an alien admitted as a refugee, or a legal permanent resident;
  • be enrolled full-time in a computer science, engineering or math major.
  • demonstrate academic potential. LaGuardia freshmen who have never attended another college should have earned a B (or higher) grade point average in high school. Current LaGuardia students must have a 2.75 college GPA and at least 9 credits earned at LaGuardia.
  • demonstrate financial need and be eligible for Federal financial aid.

For more information, visit the Student Financial Services website.

Transfer

Computers careers may require, at minimum, a Bachelor’s degree.
LaGuardia graduates who have planned  their program carefully can often  transfer to a 4-year college as juniors. Colleges that you’re considering for transfer may have different requirements, so you should meet regularly with a LaGuardia academic advisor and Transfer Services, starting as early as possible.

Computer Careers: The Hot List

Technology will play an increasingly important role in society over the years to come – in terms of business, career, community and other aspects of everyday life. Therefore, more people will need to use and feel comfortable with it.

So, it’s not surprising that the number of technology jobs in New York City is expected to increase more than 20% between 2002 and 2012. And this doesn’t include anticipated job growth in other industries that require extensive knowledge of computers.

Many of New York City's hot computer careers are listed here. We encourage you to research additional careers.

Careers listed in bold usually require at least a Bachelor’s degree.
