INTRODUCTION
Since the mid-1980s, a variety of mentoring programs have
been offered at LaGuardia Community College. In 1985, Professor
Naomi Greenberg launched a program whereby LaGuardia Students
served as mentors to at-risk high school students. Building
on the success of this mentoring project, Steve Dauz, as Director
of the College Discovery Program in 1998, established a peer-mentoring
project for College Discovery students. Today, through the
1st year experience committee, LaGuardia Community College
is pleased to offer mentoring services to a wide variety of
students through its College -Wide Mentoring Project.
The College - Wide Mentoring Project invites members of the
LaGuardia community (students, faculty, staff and alumni)
to serve as mentors for at-risk students. By participating
in this project, you will be helping new students make the
difficult transition to college life.
Right now, you may have several questions about how to be
an effective mentor. This web site was created to provide
a brief overview of the mentoring project. But since no web
site could possibly answer all your questions, you should
know that, as a mentor, you will have a mentor of your own.
If you have any questions about mentoring or if you just want
to talk about your mentoring experience--don't hesitate to
call any of the members of the College-Wide Mentoring Committee:
